Abstract : | The study, based on two growing cycles (2012-2013 and 2013-2014), was conducted as a field experiment at the Mochelek Experimental Station of the University of Science and Technology, Bydgoszcz, and comprised eight experimental treatments in four replicates. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of the time of sowing (facultative vs. spring) on the qualitative characteristics of wheat grain. Four cultivars were selected for the, according to theirs attributes for facultative time of sowing and grain utility. The laboratory analyses of grain consisted in the determination of bulk density of the grain, falling number, wet gluten content, total protein content and sedimentation value according to Zeleny. Statistical analysis revealed that both the time of sowing and the cultivar, as well as the interaction of these factors, affected the grain characteristics. The grain of tested spring wheat cultivars sown in March was characterised by higher protein content, gluten content and sedimentation index than those from spring sowing. Moreover, the facultative sowing had a positive effect on grain density and falling number. The highest amount of protein and wet gluten content in grain was the attribute of cultivar ‘Bombona’. |
